It wasn’t a good weekend for the Whale as they lost both of their games in regulation to the Albany Devils on Friday and Portland Pirates on Saturday by scores of 3-2 and 5-1. Kris Newbury and Christian Thomas had the goals against the Devils with Marek Hrivik getting the loan goal against the Pirates.

I’m not going to sit here and rehash the games because (1) they lost and (2) well they weren’t pretty so I’m sure no one really wants to re-live them. If you do, here are video highlights of both:

Funny part is somehow, probably because the AHL Eastern Conference is as bad as its NHL counterpart, the Whale still had a chance to get into the playoffs if both the Norfolk Admirals and Hershey Bears lost in regulation on Sunday. The Admirals did their part, the Bears did not and the Whale ended the season with a six game losing streak that put them in 9th place. Just one win over those last six games and they would be preparing to play the Providence Bruins next weekend.

Those games weren’t just the last of the season but possibly the last for the Connecticut Whale as rumor is the team will go back to being the Hartford Wolf Pack starting next season. Not going to lie, I never adjusted to the Whale name so I am perfectly fine with going back to being the Pack.

I’m not sure when exit interviews and such will be completed for the Whale but once they are we will see a taxi squad of players join the boys in New York for their playoff run (if they can manage to get in). After 3:43 in ice time last night, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Chris Kreider joining that crew rather than remain with the group he’s currently with.
